Serpentine

Serpentine Gemstone is of olive green color with a peculiar texture resembling that of skin of a reptile, thus the name. The name is derived from the Latin word ‘Serpentinus’ which means Serpent Stone. Although Serpentine stone can have several colors, from being colorless to white, to grey, brown, beige, black or even blue. But its most famous color is olive green. From the family of Silicates, the luster of Serpentine varies between fat, silky and glassy. A fairly fragile stone, its hardness ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale and density which can range from 2.55 to 3.30. Serpentine stone has several deposit areas around the world. In particular it is found in France, the United States, Canada, Russia, Korea, Norway and Italy. Serpentine has been the official state stone of California in US since 1965. Serpentine gemstone has been regarded as a stone of protection since ancient times. In many ancient civilizations the serpentine gemstone has been used against snake bites and to guard against black magic.
