Story of Lord Ayyappa
Legends state that once Demoness Mahishasuri (sister of asura Mahisasura) underwent severe penance and obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that she would only be defeated and killed by offspring of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. As both the Deities are male, Mahishasuri became undefeatable and starting wreaking havoc on earth. On the other hand, demon Bhasmasur gained a boon from Lord Shiva that on whomsoevers head he places his hand on will turn into ashes and tried to test the effectiveness of the boon on Lord Shiva Himself. Lord Shiva went to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu took form of a beautiful damsel Mohini and charmed Bhasmasur and said to marry her he first should put his hand on his head and dance. When Bhasmasur complied he immediately turned into ashes. Lord Shiva thanked Mohini manifestation of Lord Vishnu and their union resulted in a Divine child being born.
Meanwhile, a childless king Rajasekhara, the king of Pandalam on a hunting trip found an abandoned baby in the jungle with only a bell around his neck. The king adopted the baby as his own and named him Manikanthan meaning ‘One with a bell around his neck’. Later the king had his own child, and the queen wanted him to take over the reins of the kingdom. But by that time, it was evident that Manikanthan was a gifted child, and his eminence was there for all to see. On the advice of a nefarious minister the queen hatched a plan, faked illness and got the medic to state that only tigress’ milk can cure her. Everybody in the kingdom was scared to go fetch milk of a tigress but Manikanthan volunteered to do so.
Manikanthan went into the jungle and encountered Demoness Mahishasuri there, after a fierce fight Manikanthan defeated Mahishasuri and the Gods thanked Him for the same. Manikanthan returned to the kingdom riding a tigress, along with a tiger. The king and the whole kingdom understood the Divinity of the boy and bowed to him. Manikanthan blessed the king and reveled Himself as Lord Ayyappa. The king overwhelmed stated that he wanted to build a temple for the Lord. Manikanthan shot an arrow which fell 30 kilometers away and asked the king to build the temple there. Here is where the Sabarimala Temple stands, which is visited by lakhs of devotees every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.
