Lord Mahakaal is a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Maha means great or big and Kaal refers to as time or death, thus the name ‘Mahakaal’ means ‘the great time or death’. It is said the Kaal or time is the ruler of the mortal world and Lord Shiva as Mahakaal symbolizes that He is ruler of time and beyond and above it. Lord Mahakaal is beyond the cycle of creation, sustainer and destruction. He is from what all creation emerges and finally dissolves in to. Lord Mahakaal is worshipped and revered by all Lord Shiva devotees; He is regarded as the Agni Swaroop of Lord Shiva. He is also the consort of Goddess Kali. Legends go when Goddess Sati plunged into the Yagna fire during the Daksha Yagna episode because Her father had disrespected Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was so enraged that He took His Mahakaal manifestation and started to do Tandav, which threatened the entire universe with annihilation. Mahakal represents Shiva's destructive force, He is often depicted with black skin, a garland of skulls, sitting on dead bodies, and living at the cremation grounds.
