Parad is the Sanskrit name for Mercury, the only metal which is naturally found in the liquid state. In Hindi and Sanskrit Parad is also known as Rasa and Para. Parad is also known as Shivadhatu or Lord Shiva’s favourite metal. In Vedic texts various Gods and Goddesses are associated with different metals and Parad is associated with Lord Shiva, in fact it is termed as beej (seed/semen) of Lord Shiva. Other than Parad being the only metal found in liquid state, the fluid metal also has many other unique properties like it has the ability to dissolve other metals including gold and silver in itself and that it doesn’t mix with water. In raw liquid form Parad just like Dhatura (another favourite of Lord Shiva) is poisonous and also has many impurities (lead, mud, minerals). Parad is purified with 8 Samskaras, also known as Ashtasanskar (eight stages of purification) as mentioned in the Parad Sanmhita. Various herbs are used in purification of Parad and to make it solid and stable. As per ancient Vedic scriptures the resulting Siddh Parad is considered to be the most auspicious and has many medical and mystic properties and benefits.

Parad, its properties and benefits have been immensely glorified in numerous ancient Vedic scriptures such as Parad Samhita, Ras Ratnakar, Ras Chandasu, Rasendara Chudamani and more also. Since Vedic times, ancient sages who were alchemy and metallurgy experts uncovered various properties, benefits, procedures of Parad through Rasa-vigyan (Parad/liquid-Science) and developed various Rasa-Yana (Parad-Procedure). For example Siddh Parad which has undergone Parad Bandhan and Agnibadha has the ability to sustain high heat and temperature; it has properties of 24 Ras and 5 Tatva which cleanses the human body of many diseases and ailments. In Brahma Purana it is stated that any person who worships Parad Shiva Lingams on a daily basis is blessed with all materialistic pleasures (name, fame, power, success) and will finally attain salvation (Moksha)

As per Shiva Purana worshipping a Parad Shivling is equivalent to worshiping 108 different types of Shivling and Maa Laxmi, Lord Shiva and Lord Kuber reside where Parad Shivling is worshipped

As per scripture Ras Chintamani mere touch of Parad is equivalent to Shiva Puja done in all 3 lokas

Parad is regarded as equivalent to all Gemstones and thus help rectify Kal-sarp Dosha, Mangal Dosha or any other Planetary Doshas

As per Rudra Samhita Ravan was a Rassiddha Yogi, he was an avid devotee of Lord Shiva and used to please Him by worshipping Parad Shivling

Many kings including Ravana and Banasur secretly worshipped Parad Shivling to gain power, protection and wishes fulfilment

As per ancient scriptures worshipping a Parad Shivling at home is equivalent to worshiping Shivlings at Kedarnath and other Jyotirlingas

It is mentioned in Brahma Vaivarta Puran that till the time there is existence of Sun and Moon, a person who worships Parad Shivling will be blessed with success, wealth and all materialistic comforts in his lifetime and then ultimately attain Moksha.
