Goddess Tara is the first among the Dus Mahavidya Goddesses or 10 Great Wisdom Goddesses. The name Tara mean ‘the one who protects’ and name also means a star. She is a fierce manifestation of Goddess Shakti, often depicted as standing over a corpse with four arms holding a cleaver, scissors, a lotus and begging bowl. She is decorated with a garland of severed heads and snakes as ornaments. Goddess Tara is often depicted with lolling tongue and blood oozes from their mouths and severed head in Her hand. She is depicted with blue skin and thus is also known as Neel Tara. Many forms of Goddess Tara are worshiped in the Tantric tradition for varied benefits, the primary being Saumya (calm) and Ugra (fierce) forms. Other form of Maa Tara being Saraswathi Tara, Brihad Nila Tantra, Smashan Tara and many more. Tarapith which is considered as one of the most important shrines of Goddess Tara is located in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
