Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is beautiful semi-precious gemstone of deep-blue color; it is also available in other shades of blue ranging from light-blue to violet-blue to turquoise-blue and more. Many a times Lapis Lazuli stone is sprinkled with golden flecks which are pyrite or pure white specks which are calcite. If the spread of these flecks are uniform and are pleasing to the eye then it doesn’t lower the value of the stone. Lapis Lazuli derives its name from the Persian word ‘lazhuward’ which means blue; others believed that derived from the Latin word 'lazulum' which means blue or heaven. Lapis is primarily mineral lazurite which is a blue colored silicate of the sodalite family; It also contains calcite and pyrite, along with other minerals. The primary deposits of Lapis Lazuli are found in Afghanistan, it is also mined in Pakistan, Russia, US, Burma, Argentina, Serbia and other places. The hardness of Lapis Lazuli is between 5 – 6 on the Mohs scale. Lapis Lazuli was a sought after stone in many ancient civilizations. In ancient Egypt the Lapis Lazuli stone was associated with power, wisdom, beauty and immorality.
