Lord Kaal Bhairav is a ferocious avatar of Lord Shiva. ‘Kaal’ the word means time, it also denotes death. Thus Kaal Bhairav is the ruler of time; He is worshipped as the God who removes the fear of death. Kaal Bhairava is one of the eight avatars of Lord Shiva, He is regarded as the ‘Kotwal of Kashi’. He is keeper and protector of the Shakti Pithas, which are powerful primary temples dedicated to Goddess Shakti. Therefore temples dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav are often found in or near Shakti Peethas. In the Kalabhairava Ashtakam, Adi Shankaracharya describes Lord Kaal Bhairav, He is described as fearsome, having dark skin, wearing a garland of skulls and snakes, having three eyes and four arms. He in His four hands holds a damru, a sword or pasa (noose), a trident and a chopped fifth head of Lord Brahma.
