Maha Shivratri which means the ‘Great Night of Lord Shiva’ is easily the most important day of the year of all Shivaites or Lord Shiva devotees. It is the night when Lord Shiva revealed His Lingam form. According to the Bhagavad Purana, Lord Shiva took the deadly poison that emerged during Samudra Manthan on this day and saved the universe. It is the night when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. Also it is on this night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava, the primordial cosmic dance of creation, maintenance and destruction. On this day, worship and puja offered to Lord Shiva is considered supremely meritorious and beneficial are their power are magnified many a fold. It is believed that one who worships Lord Shiva with true devotion on Maha Shivratri is freed from all bondages and sins of Karma. He is blessed with spiritual augmentation, good health, harmonious relationships and abundance in all forms.
