Sundarkand is the fifth Kand (chapter) of the epic Shrimad Valmiki Ramayana and of Ramcharitmanas . Sundarkand means ‘beautiful chapter’, it is called so as Sunder or beautiful is one of the names of Lord Hanuman. Sunderkand is also named so as Ashoka Vatika where Ravan kept Maa Sita captive was located on Sundar Parvat in Lanka. Sundarkand is dedicated completely to Lord Hanuman, its details Lord Hanuman’s journey to Ravana’s Lanka in search of Maa Sita. Sunderkand consists of 3 Shlokas, 6 Chhands, 60 Dohe and 526 Chaupais. In Sunderkand, in the beginning Jamwant reminds Lord Hanuman about His powers (which Lord Hanuman had forgotten due to a curse) later it details Lord Hanuman’s journey and deeds in Lanka, His knowledge, wisdom, power, His dedication and love for Lord Ram and Maa Sita and much more. Lord Hanuman is one of the nine chiranjeevis (immortals) in Sanathan Dharma, thus it is believed that worshiping Lord Hanuman is very beneficial and meritorious. Sunderkand is unique as it is solely dedicated to Lord Hanuman whereas the rest of Ramayan focuses on Lord Ram’s virtues. Sundarkand Paath or recitation of Sundarkand is one best and easiest method to worship and revere Lord Hanuman. Sunderkand along with Hanuman Chalisa is recited every Tuesday and Saturday by Hanuman devotees.
Sunderkand Paath is also done on special occasions to thank the Divine for His grace and blessings. It is believed reciting Sunderkand with utmost devotion every day for forty days blesses devotees with wish fulfilment. Lord Hanuman is also known as Sankatmochan meaning the one who removes all problems and obstacles. Thus, Sunderkand Paath helps devotees tide over all difficulties and removes all obstacles in the path of success. Sunderkand Paath has deeper meaning and significance; it not only propels a devotee on the path of Bhakti and righteousness but also bestows life lessons and makes one understand the true purpose of life. As Sunderkand is the story of victory of Lord Hanuman and Lord Ram, conducting the Sunderkand Paath blesses one with mental strength and confidence.
