Goddess Kamakshi Devi is a manifestation of Goddess Tripura Sundari Devi; She is form of Goddess Shakti. She is the Goddess of tranquility and beauty. She is referred to as Goddess Kamakshi Amman in South India and Goddess Kamakhya in the East India. She is consort of Lord Shiva and Her name means ‘one with desirable/loving eyes. Goddess Kamakshi Devi is the presiding Deity of the Kamakshi Amman Temple at Kanchipuram, She is also the ruling Goddess of the city of Kanchi. Legends go that once Goddess Tripurasundari Devi took a ferocious form to slay Asura Bandashura. But Her ferocious form terrified even the Gods, they prayed to the Goddess to calm down. The Goddess took the form of Kamakshi Devi, a beautiful young girl adorned with gold jewelry. All Gods prayed to Goddess Kamakshi Devi to stay back in Kanchipuram in Her said manifestation and the Goddess obliged. Also here Goddess Kamakshi Devi did penance under a mango tree to have Lord Shiva as Her consort.
