Jagannath means ‘Lord of the Universe’; He is Lord (Nath) of the Universe (Jagat), the Lord of the three worlds, the earth (Marta), the sky (Swarg) and the underworld (Patal). Lord Jagannath is regarded as manifestation of Lord Krishna or Lord Vishnu by His devotees. Lord Jagannath is Para Brahman or the Supreme Truth for His devotees. Lord Jagannath temple, located in Puri, Odisha which is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage is the abode of Prabhu Jagannath. The temple houses a Divine, unique, incomplete wooden idol of Lord Jagannath. Along with Shree Jagannath; Shri Baladev, Mata Subhadra along with Sudarshan Chakra carved from dark Neem wood are worshipped here. Odia scriptures state that Lord Jagannath was previously worshipped as Lord Neela Madhaba, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu by tribals. Lord Jagannath temple has found mention in numerous Puranas and ancient Vedic texts such as Skanda Purana, Brahma Purana, Narada Purana, Padma Purana among others. Every year the Jagannath Rath Yatra is celebrated when the journey of Lord Jagannath is undertaken from the Puri temple to Gundicha, roughly three kilometers away. During the Jagannath Yatra, the idols are placed on three mammoth chariots, and devotees pull them with ropes.
