Story of Lord Narasimha

The Bhagavata Puraṇa narrates the legend of Lord Narasimha; once asura Hiranyakashyap undertook hard penance of Lord Brahma. Pleased Lord Brahma granted him a boon. Hiranyakashyap first asked for immorality but Lord Brahma denied the same and asked Hiranyakashyap to ask for something else. Cleverly Hiranyakashyap asked for a boon that no man or animal, no weapon, nor at night nor day, nor on land or in sky, nor inside or outside he may be killed.

After getting the boon, Hiranyakashyap became arrogant and a tyrant. He made his subjects worship him and stopped everybody from worshipping Lord Vishnu. All of the people in his kingdom obeyed his orders, but Prahlad, his own son refused as he was a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu. An enraged Hiranyakashyap intended to kill Prahlad and tied him up and asked him where his Lord Vishnu was and to call Him for help. Prahlad stated his Lord Vishnu is everywhere, this enraged Hiranyakashyap further who asked Prahlad whether his Lord Vishnu was in a pillar. To this Prahlad replied ‘yes He is’ and Hiranyakashyap broke the said pillar.

Lord Narasimha emerged from the Pillar, roaring, His was half lion and half human. He killed Demon King Hiranyakasyap with the claws of His bare hands while keeping the Demon King on his lap, on the door halfway, during sun-set thereby honoring Lord Brahma's boon and killing the Demon King.
