Legends go that once Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had an argument about material world and Lord Shiva stated that the whole material world even food is an illusion or Maya. This infuriated Goddess Parvati, who disappeared; this led to all food in the world also vanishing. There was huge famine and hunger, Gods, humans and animals alike went hungry. All prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Lord Shiva searched for food and came to understand that there was only one place in Varanasi (Kashi) where food was available. Lord Shiva went there and found Goddess Parvati in Her Annapurana avatar seated on a throne, distributing food to Gods and humans alike. Lord Shiva understood that He may have outgrown hunger but the world and even the Gods haven’t. He asked Goddess Annapurana to restore the balance.
