The Babulnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on a small hillock in Mumbai. Babulnath means Lord of the Babul tree. The temple dates back to 12th century but the current temple was built in 1780 when idols of Shiva Lingam, Ganesh, Hanuman and Maa Parvati were dug out at the spot. Legends go that the buried idols were found when a cow of the local merchant used to regularly put out all her milk at a particular spot on the hill, thus the Swayambhu Shivling was found. The Babulnath Temple is one of the most ancient temples of Mumbai. The temple is visited by lakhs of Shiva devotees on occasions such as Mahashivratri, Shravan Maas and on Mondays.
